McGhee's Audio Chapters

These audio recordings (of me reading select chapters) aren't professional, but perhaps you'll find them fun!

McGhee's Music

These Spotify playlists go with each of the chapters in the novel.  I hope you enjoy them -- I usually listened to them while writing the chapters, and the music content depended upon the subject.

McGhee's Journey

Paintings

The cover of McGhee in the Gloaming features a painting I did in early 2016. It's from a photo taken in 1986 on the Yukon River with portions of the log raft featured in Drift. Below you can see images of the painting (the photo is in the Ch12 Drift Backstory blog).  I was planning to use the photo until a friend (Zoey Lawliss) suggested doing a painting of it instead. I liked the result.  The raft was built just as described in Drift.

Several other paintings I've done feature elements which appear in the novel.  First is a painting completed about 2010 (started 2001).  It depicts the edge of my Catholic elementary school playground, and several church steeples and a bar.

The theme of bars and churches figured prominently in A Dublin Homily and was in part based upon thoughts originally conceived for this painting. I noticed (upon visiting Dublin in 2006) the same curious practice of placing churches and bars in close proximity to one another.

Signal and Noise explained the hectic time of high school for McGhee and the seeds of fear and ambivalence which have been present throughout the novel. One thread of the story (there are 23 sections, to match its place as Chapter 23 in the novel) portrays a soccer match in which McGhee dresses as a chicken to psych out the other team.  His team mates hail from Highfield, a section of his hometown of Butler. The painting below depicts the adjacent section of town -- Lyndora -- which was slavic and Polish neighborhood where many of the local steelworkers lived (until the industry imploded in the 70s).  Confessions in the Gloaming refers to this as Fr. Chepelsky's father was one of those displaced.

McGhee’s Road describes California landscape as McGhee drives CA 395 down the backside of the Sierra Nevada. On the way he passes out of the central valley of California and would have seen  vistas like the following:

Both the painting above and the painting below depict Folsom Lake (from different vantage points).

MITG Chapter PDFs

The book has been available on Amazon since summer 2016, but I'd like more people to read it.  To that end, I'm placing the chapters here in PDF format, free for the taking.  If you like them, feel free to buy a copy of the book. I'll be uploading the rest of the chapters over the next few weeks. Also feel free to read the other content on this site, including  The Margin, the book club where readers comment on the chapters, or the Chapter Backstories which provide supplemental details.

FYI, the pagination is different in these versions than the book.
